Wheatsheaf Common: HCPS are pleased that work has recently restarted at Wheatsheaf Common. We are working in conjunction with Surrey County Council to help reduce local flooding, benefit wildlife by diversifying habitat, and creating better access to the site with a network of improved paths. The work is intended to prevent flash flooding of nearby properties, which happens when there has been heavy rainfall in a short period of time. Climate change is making this a more frequent occurrence. The pools that are being constructed to accommodate excess rainfall will be beneficial to wildlife, providing breeding sites for amphibians and many aquatic insects and other invertebrates. The work includes the construction of raised paths and boardwalks, which will make the area accessible all year round. Ground works will be taking place across Wheatsheaf Common until January 2023 and we apologise for any temporary inconvenience this may cause. BBQ’s and Fires: We would like to remind you that BBQ’s and fires are not permitted on any areas of Horsell or Pyrford Common. This is particularly important at the moment with the current weather conditions. Taken from the TBH site Wildfire can spread faster than an Olympic sprinter and leaves both the wildlife and the habitat of our precious heathland decimated. With the long period of dry weather and extreme temperatures, the risk due to the dry gorse, heather and grasses is even greater than in previous years, with the official daily Fire Severity Index issued by the Met Office reaching level 5 (Exceptional) for the past weeks.
